Puja Misra Of Zoom Into Life Studio On 5 Things You Need To Know To Successfully Scale Your Business

Scaling isn’t just about doing more, it’s about doing better. Businesses that will thrive in the future will innovate continuously, whether it’s improving their products, services, or processes.
Take the example of my agency. When we first started, we offered basic branding services. Over time, we added brand story videos, strategic sales funnels, and personal brand coaching as we heard our customers asking for more from us since they loved our approach and saw results. By continuously evolving, we’ve stayed ahead of the curve and delivered immense value to our clients.

Startups usually start with a small cohort of close colleagues. But what happens when you add a bunch of new people into this close cohort? How do you maintain the company culture? In addition, what is needed to successfully scale a business to increase market share or to increase offerings? How can a small startup grow successfully to a midsize and then large company? To address these questions, we are talking to successful business leaders who can share stories and insights from their experiences about the “5 Things You Need To Know To Successfully Scale Your Business”. As a part of this series, we had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Puja Misra.

Thank you for joining us in this interview series. Our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your ‘backstory’?

My entrepreneurial journey began 14 years ago, fueled by a deep passion for creativity and strategy. Leaving behind a corporate career and stepping into the unknown as the first entrepreneur in my family, I learned the ropes of building a business from the ground up. Today, I share those lessons with purpose-driven individuals, helping them create personal brands that reflect their authenticity, values, and bold ideas. I specialize in building brands, communication strategies and marketing assets that make self-expression easy, empowering entrepreneurs, coaches, and experts to confidently stand out in competitive markets while fostering meaningful growth and genuine connections.

You’ve had a remarkable career journey. Can you highlight a key decision in your career that helped you get to where you are today?

A key decision that shaped my journey was committing to becoming a voracious reader and a lifelong learner. Early on, I recognized that my own insecurities were holding me back, so I focused on personal growth to overcome them, and that shift has contributed to the success my team and I share today. I also realized that my success was deeply tied to the success of my clients, which inspired me to make it my mission to help them conquer their fears, align with their true selves, and thrive. Another pivotal decision was expanding my team, understanding that scaling a business is not a solo endeavour but requires the strength of a capable and aligned team. These choices have profoundly impacted both my personal and professional growth, enabling me to serve my clients at a much higher level.

What’s the most impactful initiative you’ve led that you’re particularly proud of?

One of the most impactful initiatives I’ve led has been transforming my agency into a one-stop shop for passionate entrepreneurs and experts who were frustrated by fragmented services that diluted their vision. I saw how much time, money, and energy people wasted trying to align multiple vendors, only to end up with results that didn’t fully reflect their brand’s potential. So, I decided to create a seamless solution, a full-service agency where clients can start with an idea and move through every stage, from communication strategy and brand identity to professional photography, video production, websites, and sales funnels. Now, our clients enjoy award-winning expertise under one roof, allowing them to focus on growing their business while we handle everything needed to build their brand. Seeing the excitement and relief on their faces when their vision comes to life is incredibly rewarding for me personally!

Sometimes our mistakes can be our greatest teachers. Can you share a mistake you’ve made and the lesson you took away from it?

One of the biggest lessons I learned early on in my entrepreneurial journey came from the mistake of thinking I could grow my business just by sitting behind a computer. The first few years I was working hard, but I wasn’t putting myself out there, meeting people, or building connections in the community. Soon I realized that if I wanted to match the big goals I had, I needed to show up in full power every day. So, I started attending networking events, meeting other business owners, and sharing my story. That shift changed everything, people connected with who I was, what I stood for, and the values driving my business.

The lesson I learnt was that business growth doesn’t just happen behind a screen, it happens when you show up and let the world see the real you.

How has mentorship played a role in your career, whether receiving mentorship or offering it to others?

Mentorship has been a game changer in my career, it’s the secret ingredient that fast tracked my growth, both personally and professionally. I’m incredibly thankful to my mentors, especially Russell Brunson, who not only taught me invaluable strategies but also inspired me through the way he runs his business with integrity and core values that resonate deeply with me. His guidance has shaped my thought process, my business decisions, and even my approach to helping others. It’s truly a ripple effect, and I’m honoured to both receive and offer that support.

Developing your leadership style takes time and practice. Who do you model your leadership style after? What are some key character traits you try to emulate?

I deeply admire Russell Brunson’s leadership style and strive to model many aspects of it in my own journey. His ability to lead his team with integrity and a strong foundation of core values has been incredibly inspiring to me. What stands out most is his commitment to serving others, he genuinely cares about the success of his team and community, which creates a culture of trust and collaboration. I aim to emulate those traits in my own leadership by creating a supportive environment, leading with purpose, and always staying true to my values. For me, leadership is about empowering others to succeed while staying grounded in authenticity and service.

Based on your experience, can you share with our readers the “5 Things You Need To Know To Successfully Scale Your Business”?

For me scaling a business is both an art. Over the last 14 years, I’ve had the privilege of helping entrepreneurs turn their ideas and small startups into thriving businesses. Here are the top five essential things every business owner needs to focus on when scaling:

  • Cultivate an Innovation Mindset

Scaling isn’t just about doing more, it’s about doing better. Businesses that will thrive in the future will innovate continuously, whether it’s improving their products, services, or processes.
Take the example of my agency. When we first started, we offered basic branding services. Over time, we added brand story videos, strategic sales funnels, and personal brand coaching as we heard our customers asking for more from us since they loved our approach and saw results. By continuously evolving, we’ve stayed ahead of the curve and delivered immense value to our clients.

  • Clarity of Target Audience, Especially Psychographics

It’s not enough to know who your audience is demographically, you need to dive deeper into their psychographics — their fears, desires, motivations, and struggles.
For example, I worked with a client who was a wellness coach. She initially thought her audience was “women aged 25–40 who want to lose weight.” But when we dug deeper, we discovered her ideal clients were women who felt overwhelmed juggling careers and family life and were looking for emotional support, not just physical transformation and the age zone moved to 30 -60. This clarity helped her create a program that resonated on a deeper level, skyrocketing her growth.

  • Clarity of Messaging

Your message is what sets you apart and attracts the right people. A brand with a vague message needs to work on connecting with its audience.
I remember working with a Real estate team who initially positioned themselves as “Your Local Realtors.” After refining their messaging, they became “The experts who help business owners find real estate opportunities to grow their legacy.” That simple shift helped them attract serious investor clients and establish themselves as trusted advisors in their niche.

  • Embrace Brand Building as a Legacy Investment

Most startup and small business owners think building a brand is just about logo and colours, in fact, it’s all about creating an emotional connection with your audience. Legacy businesses invest in brand building because they know it’s the foundation for long-term success.
For example, I worked with a Life Coach who was hesitant to invest in branding, thinking it was an expense. After creating a clear brand story and identity, she went from struggling to find clients to attracting her ideal audience from all over the world effortlessly. Her confidence grew, her business expanded, and she now sees branding as the best investment she’s ever made.

  • Brilliant Customer Service Sets New Standards

The businesses that scale the fastest are often the ones with the most loyal customers. Loyalty comes from exceptional service.
One of my favourite success stories is about a client who is a Realtor. By personalizing her communication, sending birthday messages, celebrating her clients’ milestones, and genuinely showing care, she created raving fans who referred her to everyone they knew. Scaling her business became effortless because her customers became her biggest advocates.

Can you share a few of the mistakes that companies make when they try to scale a business? What would you suggest to address those errors?

When it comes to scaling a business, one of the biggest mistakes I see is that many entrepreneurs treat brand building like a one-and-done task. They create a logo, craft a tagline, maybe even launch a website, and then shift their focus entirely to day-to-day operations. But here’s the thing, your brand isn’t a box to check. It’s the fuel that powers your business engine, and if you stop refuelling, your growth will eventually stall.

I’ve seen it time and again, brands lose their connection with their audience because they forget that emotional connection drives loyalty and profits. People don’t buy just because you have a great product or service; they buy because they feel something when they think of your brand. So let’s talk about a few mistakes companies make when they try to scale… and how to avoid them.

Forgetting the Power of Emotional Connection

People buy with their hearts first and their minds second. If your brand doesn’t evoke an emotional response, you’re leaving money on the table. Once we tap into that emotional core, everything changes. Your audience feels seen, understood, and connected to your brand. And those connections turn into loyal clients who not only stay but refer others.

If you want to scale your business, ask yourself: are you still making your audience feel something? Or have you become too focused on transactions?

Trying to Scale Without Staying True to Your Core

When businesses scale quickly, it’s easy to lose sight of what made them special in the first place. Maybe you expand into new markets or add new services, and suddenly your messaging feels scattered. The problem? Your audience starts to feel confused, and confusion kills the connection. Make sure to go back to the drawing board and realign everything to your core message. That clarity will bring your audience back and make scaling smoother because your brand is now rooted in a clear purpose.

Brand building isn’t just about how your business looks, it’s about how your business feels. It’s the energy, the connection, the values that resonate with your audience on a human level. And if you want to scale successfully, you need to make brand-building a lifestyle.

Scaling includes bringing new people into the organization. How can a company preserve its company culture and ethos when new people are brought in?

Preserving company culture during scaling is about protecting the heart and soul of your business. When you bring new people into the fold, it’s crucial to prioritize hiring for attitude over skills. Skills can always be taught, but attitude, how someone approaches their work, their willingness to collaborate, and their alignment with your company’s core values are foundational. I found that when someone doesn’t share your values, they can unintentionally disrupt the culture you’ve worked so hard to build. Every new team member I bring on isn’t just evaluated on what they can do but on who they are. Do they resonate with our mission? Do they embody our values like creativity, integrity, and going the extra mile for clients? From the first interview to onboarding, I emphasize why we do what we do and how those values guide us daily. It’s about weaving the culture into every client interaction. And as a leader, I know my actions set the tone. If I’m not living those values myself, how can I expect my team to? It’s a constant, intentional process to ensure that as we grow, our ethos grows stronger. That’s how you scale without losing your identity, by making your culture non-negotiable and ensuring every team member is not just part of your business but part of its heartbeat.

Many times, a key aspect of scaling your business is scaling your team’s knowledge and internal procedures. What tools or techniques have helped your teams be successful at scaling internally?

Scaling a business isn’t just about growth, it’s about scaling the knowledge, tools, and processes that keep everything running smoothly. For me, this means investing heavily in self-development and skill-building. Each year, we dedicate thousands of dollars to industry training, workshops, and courses… not just for leadership but for the entire team. We believe that when the team grows, the business grows. But knowledge alone isn’t enough, you need the right tools to turn that knowledge into action.

One of the biggest game-changers for us has been investing in software and technology that streamlines our workflows and improves communication. Finding the right CRM system, for example, wasn’t an overnight process. It took time and trial to land on one that fit our needs without feeling clunky. But once we found the right match, it transformed the way we manage projects and communicate internally. Everything became seamless, with no more missed details or endless email chains. Of course, a tool is only as good as the people using it, so we prioritize training. We make sure every team member feels confident and comfortable with new systems to ensure smooth and fast adoption.

With the right combination of investment in skills and technology, we set the foundation for scaling not just efficiently but effectively, with everyone aligned and empowered to succeed.

What software or tools do you recommend to help onboard new hires?

When it comes to onboarding new teammates, the most essential part of the process isn’t just about introducing tools, it’s about having a detailed conversation about company culture. Before we dive into the technical side of things, we make sure every new team member understands our core values, how we operate, and what’s expected of them. This sets the stage for everything else and ensures alignment right from the start.

For managing the onboarding process itself, we rely on Basecamp, which is our go-to software for internal and client communication. It’s fantastic for organizing workflows, keeping everyone on the same page, and ensuring no step gets missed. New hires can easily access their tasks, project timelines, and important documents all in one place. What we love most about Basecamp is its simplicity, it’s not overwhelming for someone new, and it promotes clear communication without clutter.

Because of your role, you are a person of significant influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most people, what would that be? You never know what your ideas can trigger.

If I could inspire a movement, it would encourage every entrepreneur to start with their WHY. Too often, people jump into business with the sole intention of making money, but when you strip it down, success isn’t just about profits, it’s about purpose. I truly believe that when you align your business with a deeper purpose, you create something that not only thrives financially but also impacts lives in meaningful ways.

Not all days in business are sunshine. There are going to be challenges, and moments where you question everything. It’s in those moments that your WHY becomes your power. It’s what gives you the resilience to keep going, to plow through the hard days, and to show up with conviction. That’s why I’d inspire a movement where every entrepreneur invests time in discovering their WHY before they even think about their business model. Ask yourself: How do you want to impact the world? What legacy do you want to leave behind? When you start from a place of purpose, everything else… strategy, revenue, growth falls into place.

This kind of mindset creates ripple effects. Purpose-driven businesses inspire trust, uplift communities, empower people, and solve real problems. It’s not just about business it’s about building a better world, one purposeful venture at a time.
