Adaptability: Authentic leaders are perceived as more approachable and understanding, which helps them navigate change. During a significant shift in market dynamics, my genuine concern for the team’s challenges and adaptive strategies encouraged everyone to embrace the changes more willingly and effectively, resulting in minimal disruption. Integrating new systems, processes, and loyalty products can be intimidating and stressful for all involved.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series. Before we dive into our discussion about authentic, feminine leadership, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you share with us the backstory about what brought you to your specific career path?
With a dynamic 40-year career that included constant change, various leadership styles, technological advancements, such as electronic ticketing, and cross-functional teams on the global stage, I was driven by my passion for reimagining and redesigning life, health, wealth, and careers. I was on a mission to bridge the gap between the present Web2 or legacy systems and the transformative potential of AI, Blockchain, Web3 strategic applications, and emerging technologies.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?
One of the most defining moments in my career is being a founding member of a blockchain project called BAND Royalty, a new Web3 Music Label. This project was not just about leveraging blockchain for music rights management; it was about revolutionizing how artists connect with their fans and how music is owned, valued, and monetized in the digital age. The challenge of navigating uncharted territory in the music industry and the opportunity to empower artists and fans is incredibly fulfilling. This experience underscored the importance of continual learning, vision, adaptability, and the power of emerging technologies to redefine industries.
What do you think makes your company stand out? Can you share a story?
We pride ourselves on a legacy of innovation and social responsibility, blending business growth with meaningful societal contributions. My approach is deeply rooted in a rich history of mastering legacy technologies and best practices in Web2, accumulated over decades of experience. Now, with knowledge and awareness of Web3 technologies, we are uniquely positioned to offer solutions that save money and time and significantly enhance revenue and customer reach for all stakeholders in a decentralized environment. Our commitment extends beyond business success; we empower underserved and underprivileged communities and engage with nonprofit organizations in strategic planning and technology initiatives. As a bridge for national partnerships that bolster regional outcomes — and vice versa — we stand at the forefront of creating a win-win scenario for all involved. Our vision is clear: to use blockchain technology to foster financial inclusion and ensure our business objectives align with our mission to advance societal well-being. This synthesis of historical expertise, cutting-edge technology, social entrepreneurship, and community focus encapsulates the essence of Mitchell Universal Network LLC, setting a new standard for impactful business practices.
You are a successful business leader. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?
Empathy: Empathy has allowed me to understand clients’ and their customers’ needs deeply. For instance, when working with non-profit organizations, corporate brands, or visionaries, I quickly realize when their digital experience is too impersonal. You can improve sales significantly by assessing customer interaction points and enhancing engagement and personalization.
On a more personal note, my experiences living in diverse cultures, from Brooklyn, New York, to Amsterdam, Netherlands, have deepened my empathy for different community needs, driving our company’s mission to make technology accessible and beneficial for all.
Resilience: In the competitive corporate world, resilience matters and is crucial. Early in my career, I led a major global project that ran out of money and was on the brink of bankruptcy. The project needed to stay on track even though financing was lacking. I was a nervous wreck at first, but I had to continue to drive the project to success. Too many stakeholders and industries were depending on the project’s success. I gathered feedback and adjusted the strategy, and the project was one of the most successful projects with a global societal impact.
Innovation: Pivoting to Web3 Podcast is one of my most innovative ventures. Being creative has consistently opened new avenues of opportunity and collaboration. Pivoting to Web3 Podcast was my way of educating the public on what is happening and why. Constantly learning and adapting to change is how I have succeeded over the decades. AI, DeFi, Blockchain technology, Web3 strategic applications, and emerging technologies will significantly shift and impact the world. I don’t want anybody to be left behind and not know what is going on and why. The change will be like the impact of Intel and computerization across the globe.
Leadership often entails making difficult decisions or hard choices between two apparently good paths. Can you share a story with us about a hard decision or choice you had to make as a leader? I’m curious to understand how these challenges have shaped your leadership.
In facing one of the more challenging decisions as a leader, I was confronted with the task of balancing the needs of our organization, our employees, and our customers, all while navigating the complexities of funding constraints for a significant project. This project was not just another initiative; it was a groundbreaking venture into cutting-edge technology specifically tailored for the travel, tourism, and hospitality industries on a global scale. The technology promised to redefine our operations and set new standards in the industry, but its implementation was fraught with dependencies that needed meticulous monitoring. The crux of the decision lay in strategizing how to propel the project forward at full speed despite the financial hurdles. It was a delicate balancing act.
To navigate this situation, strategic relationships and collaborations became paramount. This approach allowed us to maintain our commitment to innovation while honoring our responsibilities to our employees and customers, ensuring that the project moved forward without compromise.
Ok, thank you for that. Let’s now jump to the primary focus of our interview. Can you share a personal experience where embracing your unique leadership style, which might not align with traditional expectations, led to a significant positive impact in your organization or team?
In an era where technology continually reshapes our world, I’ve taken a path less expected for someone of my tenure, pursuing Executive Education Certifications from prestigious institutions like the University of California HAAS School of Business and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Pursuing knowledge in the face of societal expectations to slow down exemplifies my belief in lifelong learning. This philosophy fuels our innovative drive and ensures our contributions extend beyond business success to societal advancement. Who would think that I would be hosting a podcast now in 20 countries worldwide and growing. Moreover, a YouTube channel that is accepted in the YouTube Partner Program.
In your journey as a leader, how have you balanced demonstrating resilience, often seen as a masculine trait, with showing vulnerability, which is equally powerful, but typically feminine? Can you give an example where this balance created a meaningful difference?
The project I mentioned previously had major funding issues but needed to be delivered on time. I had to bite the bullet, ask for help from my strategic partners and collaborators, and keep it moving with energized style and grace. The technologies implemented decades ago are still utilized today.
As a woman in leadership, how have you navigated and challenged gender stereotypes, especially in situations where traditional male-dominated approaches are the norm? What strategies have you employed to remain authentic to your style?
Navigating and challenging gender stereotypes in traditionally male-dominated fields has been a cornerstone of my journey as a woman in leadership. My approach has always been to blend diplomacy with directness, leveraging facts, precise situation analysis, and a keen eye for strategic dependencies to assert my presence and influence. This method has allowed me to remain authentic to my leadership style while effectively breaking through barriers.
One particularly effective strategy is my commitment to continuous learning and staying at the forefront of emerging technologies. This dedication positions me as a knowledgeable leader in fields like AI, Blockchain, and Web3 emerging technologies and dismantles stereotypes about women’s capabilities in technology and leadership.
How do you utilize emotional intelligence and active listening to create an inclusive environment in your team or organization? Could you share a specific instance where these qualities particularly enhanced team dynamics or performance?”
In the realm of crisis management and navigating disastrous incidents, emotional intelligence becomes a critical asset. It’s not just about making decisions swiftly but doing so with a deep understanding of the emotional landscape of your team and the stakeholders involved. A key aspect of this is active listening — truly hearing the concerns, fears, and suggestions of those around you, including customers, which can provide invaluable insights into the most effective course of action.
What role has mentorship played in developing your authentic leadership style, and how do you communicate authentically to inspire and empower both your mentors and mentees?
Mentorship has played an instrumental role in shaping my authentic leadership style. It has been a two-way street of learning and growth, where I’ve had the privilege of receiving wisdom from seasoned leaders and imparting knowledge. Communicating authentically to inspire and empower my mentors and mentees involves a blend of transparency, vulnerability, and encouragement. I make it a point to share not just my successes but also the challenges and failures I’ve encountered along the way.
A specific instance where mentorship enriched my leadership style is that in the past two years, I have surrounded myself with exceptional advisors, coaches, and mentors. Your network is your net worth and your foundation for additional learning, knowledge, awareness, and opportunities. Learning, to me, is the light to see and manage change.
Ok super. Here is the main question of our interview. Based on your experience and research, can you please share “5 Ways Leading Authentically As A Woman Will Affect Your Leadership”? If you can, please share a story or an example for each.
2 . Enhancing Team Trust and Cohesion: Being genuine and transparent in my interactions has helped build a foundation of trust that enhances team performance. A memorable moment was during a critical phase of a project when I openly shared my concerns and vulnerabilities about the challenges we were facing. This authenticity encouraged my team to do the same, leading to a brainstorming session where we collectively found a breakthrough solution, strengthening our bond as a team in the process.
3 . Empowering Others: Authentic leadership involves empowering others to take initiative and lead in their areas of expertise. An example of this was when I delegated the lead of a major marketing campaign to a junior team member who had shown exceptional creativity and initiative. This boosted her confidence and led to one of our most successful campaigns, underlining the importance of empowering team members to step up.
4 . Personal Growth and Resilience: Leading authentically has pushed me to evolve and adapt professionally and personally. Facing and overcoming biases throughout my career and personal life has taught me resilience and the importance of staying true to my vision. Key instances that stand out are when I am underestimated due to racial and/or gender stereotypes. I usually use the opportunity to showcase my skill sets, knowledge, and diplomacy, which wins accolades and challenges the stereotypes head-on.
5 . Fostering Inclusivity and Diversity: Authentic leadership as a woman means actively promoting an environment where diversity of thought, background, and experience is valued consistently.
Are there potential pitfalls or challenges associated with being an empathetic leader? How can these be addressed?
Navigating the complexities of empathetic leadership involves strategic measures within the employees and interactions with stakeholders, key clients, and customers. A significant concern is emotional burnout, as leaders with high empathy levels may take on emotional weight.
To counteract this, establishing personal boundaries and engaging in self-care practices are essential to maintaining emotional strength. Additionally, there’s a risk of being perceived as overly accommodating or hesitant if empathy leads to extended decision-making periods. Striking a balance between empathy and decisiveness is crucial, ensuring that decisions not only cater to the immediate needs but also align with the organization’s, stakeholders’, and customers’ best interests. Balancing the needs of people and the organization is vital to success.
Ensuring equity can also pose a challenge when trying to meet internal and external customers’ varied needs and perspectives. Implementing systematic feedback and transparent decision-making can help uphold fairness and objectivity, enhancing a culture of cohesion, stakeholder trust, customer satisfaction, and overall organizational resilience through self-awareness, balance, and clear communication.
You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-)
1. Decentralization and Empowerment: Web3 technologies foster a decentralized internet where users control their data, identities, and transactions. This empowerment can democratize access to information, reduce monopolistic control, and enable more equitable participation in the digital economy.
2. Enhanced Security and Privacy: AI and Web3 technologies can significantly improve security and privacy. Blockchain, a foundational technology of Web3, provides immutable and transparent record-keeping, reducing fraud and enhancing trust. AI-driven security systems can predict and neutralize cyber threats proactively.
3. Innovation in Healthcare: AI’s predictive analytics can revolutionize healthcare by enabling early diagnosis and personalized treatment plans. Web3’s decentralized data management can ensure patient data privacy while allowing seamless sharing between authorized providers.
4. Financial Inclusion: Web3 technologies, through cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance (DeFi), offer financial services to the unbanked and underbanked populations worldwide. AI can further enhance these services through personalized financial advice and risk assessment.
5. Sustainable Development and Climate Action: AI can optimize energy consumption, reduce waste, and enhance resource management, contributing significantly to sustainable development goals and climate action. Web3 technologies can support these efforts through transparent and traceable supply chains, which are essential for monitoring environmental impacts and ensuring adherence to sustainability standards.
This movement aims to create a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future for all by leveraging the transformative potential of tomorrow’s technologies today. It includes a significant focus on environmental sustainability and climate change, addressing some of the most critical challenges facing our planet.
6. Benefits for Nonprofit Organizations: For nonprofit organizations, the integration of AI, Blockchain and Web3 technologies can streamline operations, enhance fundraising efforts, and foster greater transparency. AI can optimize resource allocation, personalize donor engagement, and automate administrative tasks, allowing nonprofits to focus more on their mission-driven work. Web3 technologies can offer new fundraising avenues through cryptocurrencies and smart contracts, ensuring transparency and trust in financial transactions. This technological shift can significantly amplify the impact of nonprofit organizations by increasing efficiency, engagement, and accountability.
As for starting a movement that could bring a tremendous amount of good to the most people, I would champion the “Tech for Good” movement. This initiative would focus on leveraging emerging technologies like AI, blockchain, and Web3 to address critical global challenges such as poverty, education, healthcare, and climate change. By fostering collaboration between technologists, social entrepreneurs, nonprofits, and communities, we can create innovative solutions that are scalable, sustainable, and have a profound societal impact. The “Tech for Good” movement would not only aim to solve immediate problems but also empower individuals and communities with the tools and knowledge to shape their future.
