It would start with extensive education and awareness campaigns targeting small business owners. Many entrepreneurs are willing to embrace sustainability, but they lack the knowledge and resources to do so effectively. Workshops, webinars and online courses would be offered to equip them with the necessary skills and understanding of sustainable practices.

What are 5 ways to lead a successful Marketing Management team? To address this, we are talking to marketing leaders who can share stories and insights from their experiences. As a part of this series, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kumare Vijayendra.
Kumar Vijayendra is an Amazon #1 bestselling author, a business speaker and entrepreneur with wide experience in leading business transformation in diverse organizations globally. He is an invited member of the Forbes Business Council and sits on the Board of multiple organizations.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Before we dive in, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you share your personal backstory with us?
I have my roots in India where I created my first entrepreneurial venture offering small businesses a one-stop solution for all their financial and legal needs. After that, I led a very impactful career with the government creating and leading programs to bring about transparency and accountability in citizen-government interactions. I moved to the US to get an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh and graduated best in my class with multiple recognitions and awards.
I embarked on an entrepreneurial journey soon after creating small businesses. I am passionate about the potential and impact of Small Businesses on economic, ecological and social transformation and pursue that with my books, articles, podcasts and research papers.
Can you share with us three strengths, skills, or characteristics that helped you to reach this place in your career? How can others actively build these areas within themselves?
My message is Dream, Create and Repeat. I firmly believe in Dreaming big, working with grit to Create those dreams to reality and go on repeating that cycle better than the last time. This is an inherent expression of our humanity, a desire to be better than yesterday and leave an impact bigger than ourselves. It is all about connecting with that.
Fantastic. Let’s now shift to the main part of our interview. What are some strategies you use to identify and attract top talent to your marketing team, and how do you ensure they are a good fit for your organization?
Attracting top talent to your marketing team is crucial for the success and growth of your company. Here are some strategies I would use to attract top talent:
- Craft clear job descriptions that outline the responsibilities, skills required and expectations for the role. This helps understand what the job ensures that those who apply are genuinely interested.
- Utilize online professional networking sites and industry-specific platforms to post job openings. This helps you target a more relevant audience.
- Encourage your existing team members to refer potential candidates. They will usually recommend individuals who are a cultural fit since they are familiar with the company’s work environment.
- Ensure your compensation packages are competitive. Consider offering unique benefits or perks, such as remote work options or flexible schedules.
- Require candidates to complete skills assessments or provide a portfolio of their work, especially for roles that involve creative or technical skills.
A structured interview process with multiple rounds and involving team members from various departments helps in getting a well-rounded evaluation of candidates and reduces bias. You can attract top talent to your team while also ensuring they are a good fit for your organization, contributing to your company’s long-term success and growth.
What specific backgrounds, qualities, or credentials do you look for when hiring for management and senior positions?
I look for a combination of specific backgrounds, qualities and credentials that align with the needs of the role and the values of the organization. Some of these key factors are:
- Candidates should have a track record of success in roles similar to the one they’re applying for. Whether it’s industry-specific knowledge or a proven ability to make critical decisions, relevant experience is crucial.
- I seek candidates who can inspire and motivate teams, communicate effectively and make tough decisions when necessary. This includes the ability to delegate, set goals and provide constructive feedback.
- Senior roles require a strategic mindset. I look for candidates who can see the big picture, set long-term goals, and develop and execute strategies to achieve them.
- Ethical behavior is non-negotiable. I look for candidates who demonstrate a commitment to honesty, integrity and ethical decision-making in both their personal and professional lives.
- Senior positions are often responsible for achieving specific outcomes and objectives. I want candidates who are results-driven and can consistently meet or exceed performance targets.
As an entrepreneur, I value candidates who possess an entrepreneurial mindset, even in non-startup settings. This includes a willingness to take calculated risks, think creatively and continuously seek opportunities for growth and improvement.
A combination of these backgrounds, qualities and credentials is generally what I look for to ensure that candidates are well-equipped to excel in their roles and drive the company forward.
When it comes to managing large teams, WFH, and different time zones, how do you prioritize communication and collaboration to ensure a cohesive marketing strategy?
Managing large teams, especially in a remote work environment with different time zones, requires a strategic approach to communication and collaboration to ensure a cohesive marketing strategy. Establish clear communication channels and protocols for your team. This includes choosing the right tools for communication, such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, or project management software like Asana or Trello. Also schedule regular team meetings that accommodate different time zones. This might involve rotating meeting times to ensure that no team member is consistently inconvenienced. Consider adopting a global scheduling tool that helps identify suitable meeting times across time zones. Implement a robust task management system. Once done, clearly define roles and responsibilities and use project management tools to assign tasks, set deadlines and track progress. This ensures that work is organized and everyone knows their responsibilities. Schedule one-on-one or small group check-ins with team members to discuss individual progress and address any concerns. This provides a more personal touch in remote work environments and allows for open communication. By prioritizing these elements, you can ensure a cohesive marketing strategy that leverages the strengths of your diverse team.
How do you stay on top of the latest trends, technologies, and AI to ensure your team is implementing the most effective marketing strategies?
Staying on top of the latest trends, technologies, and AI to ensure effective marketing strategies is crucial for any business leader and entrepreneur. Here’s how I approach this:
- Dedicate time for continuous learning to gain insights into the latest marketing trends and technologies. Encourage your team to do the same. Invest in their professional development to keep them up to date.
- Build and maintain a strong network of industry professionals. This network can be a valuable source of information and a platform for sharing ideas and best practices.
- Subscribe to industry publications, blogs and newsletters that provide regular updates on marketing trends and AI advancements.
- Collaborate with experts in AI and technology. Consider forming partnerships with tech companies or hiring consultants who specialize in these areas.
- Test different approaches to see what works best for your specific audience and industry. Encourage a culture of innovation within your team, where employees feel comfortable suggesting and testing new ideas.
Keep a close eye on your competitors. Identify gaps or opportunities where you can differentiate your brand and stay ahead of the curve. Recognize that the marketing landscape is constantly evolving. Be prepared to pivot and adapt your strategies as new trends and technologies emerge. Business leaders and entrepreneurs can stay informed, innovative and well-prepared to implement the most effective marketing strategies in an ever-changing landscape.
In an industry that is often focused on data and metrics, how do you balance the importance of quantitative data with the qualitative insights and instincts needed for success?
Balancing quantitative data with qualitative insights and instincts is crucial for success in any industry, especially in today’s data-driven business landscape.
- Determine what you want to achieve and what success looks like for your company. This will provide a framework for both quantitative and qualitative evaluation.
- Metrics and data-driven insights can provide valuable information about customer behavior, market trends, and operational efficiency.
- Trust your instincts and experience when necessary, especially in situations where data is limited or conflicting. Gut feelings can sometimes lead to innovative solutions.
- Use quantitative metrics to identify a problem area and then rely on qualitative insights to understand the underlying reasons and potential solutions.
- Don’t hesitate to seek advice and input from mentors, industry peers, and advisors. They can provide fresh perspectives and help you balance your instincts with external insights.
The key to success as a business leader and entrepreneur is finding the right balance between quantitative data and qualitative insights. Embrace a flexible and adaptive approach that allows you to leverage both to make informed decisions and drive your business forward.
What tips do you have to motivate and inspire your team to consistently meet and exceed their goals?
Motivating and inspiring a team to consistently meet and exceed their goals is essential for the success of any business. Here is how you can achieve it:
- Set clear, specific and challenging goals for your team. Make sure these goals are aligned with the overall objectives of the organization.
- Demonstrate a strong work ethic, dedication and enthusiasm for your work. When your team sees you setting a high standard, they are more likely to follow suit.
- Give your team members the autonomy to make decisions and take ownership of their work. When employees feel trusted and empowered, they are more likely to be motivated to succeed.
- Implement a reward and recognition system that acknowledges and rewards outstanding performance. This could include bonuses, promotions, or other forms of recognition.
- Help your team understand the broader purpose and impact of their work. When employees see how their contributions align with the company’s mission and values, they are more likely to feel motivated and inspired.
Motivation is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Different team members may be motivated by different factors, so it’s important to get to know your team individually and tailor your approach accordingly. Regularly check in with your team to understand their needs, challenges and what motivates them the most.
How do you handle underperforming team members?
Handling underperforming team members is a crucial aspect of effective leadership and entrepreneurship. But it is very important to address this issue in the following ways:
1. Before taking any action, objectively assess the underperformance issue. Document specific instances of poor performance, including dates, details and any impact on the team.
2. Initiate a candid and private conversation with the underperforming team member. Express your concerns and provide specific examples of where they are falling short. Listen to their perspective and try to understand any underlying issues or challenges they may be facing.
3. Work with the team member to develop a performance improvement plan that outlines specific goals, deadlines, and resources they may need to improve their performance. This plan should be realistic and achievable.
4. Maintain thorough records of all interactions, including meetings, performance reviews and any correspondence related to the underperformance issue. This documentation can be essential if further action is required.
5. It’s important to involve your HR department or legal counsel when dealing with underperformance issues to ensure that you follow all relevant employment laws and company policies.
Your approach should be fair, consistent, and focused on helping the team member succeed while also protecting the interests of your business. Effective leadership involves balancing compassion with accountability to create a productive and positive work environment.
What would you say is the most valuable marketing software in your tech stack?
The choice of the most valuable marketing software in my tech stack would depend on various factors, including the nature of my business, target audience and marketing strategy. I use the following more than others for my requirements -
- Content Management Systems like WordPress is crucial for managing website content and publishing blog posts. It’s a foundation for content marketing, allowing you to optimize content for user engagement.
- Social Media Management Tools like Hootsuite or Buffer are essential for managing multiple social media platforms, scheduling posts and analyzing social media performance. These tools can help streamline your social media marketing efforts.
- Analytics Tools such as Google Analytics or Adobe Analytics provide valuable insights into your website and marketing performance. Understanding key metrics is vital for making data-driven marketing decisions.
The most valuable marketing software for your business will depend on your specific needs and goals. It’s crucial to assess your marketing strategy, budget and available resources when selecting software for your tech stack. Regularly reviewing and adjusting your tech stack to align with changing marketing trends and customer behaviors is essential for staying competitive in the digital landscape.

Here is our main question: Can you please share your “Five Things You Need To Lead a Successful Marketing Management Team.”
1. Clear Vision and Strategy — For example, if you are leading a marketing team for a startup in the tech industry. Your clear vision might be to position your product as the most user-friendly solution in the market. To achieve this, your strategy could involve prioritizing user experience, creating engaging content and using customer feedback to continually improve the product.
2. Effective Communication — For eg when I noticed that the marketing team was struggling because of a lack of clear communication, I implemented regular team meetings, established transparent channels for sharing ideas and encouraged open discussions. This way the team members felt more connected and motivated, leading to better collaboration and results.
3. Talent Recruitment and Development — For eg, if you identify a gap in your team’s data analysis skills, recruit a data analytics expert who not only improves your data-driven decision-making but also becomes a mentor for others on the team. This investment in talent will pay off as your campaigns become more data-driven and effective.
4. Adaptability and Innovation — If you are struggling to pivot from traditional marketing to digital marketing, embrace this change by investing in training and education, experimenting with new digital channels, and continuously analyzing results.
5. Empowerment and Accountability — For eg, empower team members by giving them ownership of specific marketing campaigns. Each team member should be responsible for planning, executing and measuring the success of their campaign. By holding them accountable for the results, they will become more invested in their work, and you will see increased creativity and dedication.
You are a person of great influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good for the greatest number of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger.
I want to inspire a movement centered around “Sustainable Small Business Ecosystems.” This movement would be geared towards creating a positive impact on society and the environment while simultaneously fostering economic growth and resilience among small businesses. Here’s how it could work:
- It would start with extensive education and awareness campaigns targeting small business owners. Many entrepreneurs are willing to embrace sustainability, but they lack the knowledge and resources to do so effectively. Workshops, webinars and online courses would be offered to equip them with the necessary skills and understanding of sustainable practices.
- To promote sustainability, we would facilitate access to funding, grants, and low-interest loans specifically earmarked for sustainable initiatives. These resources could help small businesses invest in eco-friendly technologies, green infrastructure and sustainable supply chain practices.
- Building a supportive community of sustainable small businesses is essential. By creating networks and platforms where business owners can collaborate, share best practices and learn from each other’s experiences, we can accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices.
- Lobbying for policies that support sustainable small businesses is critical. Advocacy efforts would aim to influence government policies that provide tax incentives, reduce regulatory barriers and encourage sustainable practices in the business sector.
- Educating consumers about the importance of supporting sustainable small businesses would be a significant component. A “Buy Local, Buy Green” campaign could encourage consumers to prioritize businesses that are part of the sustainable small business ecosystem.
By inspiring the Sustainable Small Business Ecosystems movement, we would not only benefit the environment but also empower small businesses to thrive in a changing economic landscape. This movement would leverage the collective power of entrepreneurs, consumers and policymakers to create a sustainable, inclusive and prosperous future for all.
