As a part of our series about “Lessons From Inspirational Women in STEM and Tech”, we had the pleasure of interviewing Wenwen Jiang.

Wenwen Jiang is an internationally renowned digital product designer and leader, and leverages over 15 years of diverse sector experience, from blockchain and payment systems to IoT, software, LBS, and eCommerce. Her innovative approach to design challenges is rooted in her interdisciplinary background, encompassing engineering, design, and Human-Computer Interaction and Design (HCID) education. Wenwen has received numerous international design awards, including the Successful Design Award and A’ Design Award, etc, showcasing her commitment to pushing design boundaries. She actively influences the design community as a gold judge, examiner, and expert member of organizations such as UXPA, United Nations Institute for Training and Research, IxDA, and ACM. Moreover, she is an accomplished author of college design textbooks and HCID and Artificial Intelligence books. Thank you so much for doing this with us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

Sure. My journey into the world of digital product design is a narrative woven with a diverse set of influences and a relentless pursuit of excellence. I didn’t follow a traditional academic path but rather forged my way through hands-on experience and a passion for research-driven design.

With a background in information engineering and graphic design, my initial foray into the design world was marked by a deep appreciation for aesthetics and creativity. However, as I delved deeper into the practical aspects of design, I realized that there was an inherent need for robust research to inform user-friendly flows and innovative solutions.

This realization was a turning point in my career. I embarked on a journey of self-directed learning and exploration, honing my design research skills and actively contributing to the field. I published numerous papers and books based on my research and findings, with a focus on Human-Computer Interaction and UX design.

My career journey has been marked by leading design projects for top Fortune 500 companies like Mastercard, AEssenseGrowth, and HP, where I had the privilege of applying my research-driven approach to serve billions of users. Each experience offered a unique set of challenges and opportunities, from shaping blockchain technologies to redefining payment systems and IoT experiences.

It’s a career path that constantly evolves, much like the digital landscape itself, and I find great fulfillment in shaping the future of design through a blend of research, innovation, and hands-on experience. In retrospect, my journey highlights the power of self-driven learning and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of design in an ever-changing industry.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you began at your company?

Definitely! Joining Fortinet marked a new and exciting chapter in my career, and one of the most interesting stories that unfolded during my time here is a testament to the collaborative spirit and innovative culture of the company.

One project that particularly stands out was our endeavor to revamp the user interface of a critical cybersecurity product. The challenge was to balance advanced functionality with a seamless user experience. As we delved into the project, I had the privilege of leading a cross-functional team that brought together experts from various departments, including engineering, product management, and design.

What made this experience truly captivating was the atmosphere of innovation and collaboration that permeated the project. We organized design sprints, conducted user research, and iterated on the user interface to ensure it met the highest standards of usability and security. The close-knit team dynamic allowed for a free exchange of ideas and a constant push for excellence.

As the project progressed, the most interesting part was witnessing the product’s transformation. The user interface, which started as a design concept, gradually took shape, incorporating the feedback and insights of our diverse team. The end result was not just a user-friendly interface but a cybersecurity solution that seamlessly integrated advanced features, addressing the needs of both novice and expert users.

This experience at Fortinet exemplifies the company’s commitment to fostering innovation and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the cybersecurity landscape. It has been said that our mistakes can be our greatest teachers. Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

Yes. In the early stages of my career, while working on a design project for my first company PPG, I made a rather amusing mistake that taught me a valuable lesson in attention to detail and communication.

The project involved creating an interactive prototype for a mobile app that aimed to streamline the user’s clothes online shopping experience. I was collaborating closely with the European engineering team to ensure the seamless integration of design and functionality. During one of our discussions, I passionately shared my vision for a ‘carousel’ feature that would present product photos in a visually engaging way.

Without realizing it, I inadvertently used the term ‘carrot’ instead of ‘carousel’ while explaining this feature to the developer. To my surprise, he nodded along and began discussing the implementation of ‘carrots’ in the app. It took a moment for both of us to realize the comical mix-up.

We had a hearty laugh about it, but the lesson was crystal clear. It highlighted the importance of precise and effective communication in a collaborative environment. In the fast-paced world of design and technology, even a minor miscommunication can lead to significant deviations from the intended design.

Since that amusing incident, I’ve made it a point to ensure that my communication with team members and stakeholders is clear, concise, and unambiguous. It’s a lesson that has not only spared us from ‘carrot’ features but also enhanced the efficiency and effectiveness of our design projects. It’s a reminder that even the funniest mistakes can be our greatest teachers when it comes to honing our skills and fostering effective teamwork.

What do you think makes your company stand out? Can you share a story?

I joined Fortinet as a staff product designer around one year ago. Fortinet’s exceptional standing in the tech industry stems from its unwavering commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and a strong sense of purpose. It’s a company that truly embodies the values of diversity and fosters a culture of constant learning and growth.

One striking example of what sets Fortinet apart is the way the company approaches inclusion and empowerment. While working at Fortinet for nearly a year, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand how the organization values the professional development of its employees, regardless of their background or gender. The company actively provides opportunities for employees to excel in their respective fields.

I’d like to share a story that exemplifies Fortinet’s commitment to inspiring and empowering women in STEM. Recently, Fortinet organized a leadership event where accomplished women in the company shared their insights and experiences with a diverse audience, including women aspiring to pursue careers in tech. The event aimed to celebrate the achievements of women in STEM and foster a sense of community and mentorship.

As I observed the audience, I could see the spark of inspiration in the eyes of those who attended, especially the younger women who saw the possibilities and opportunities that the tech industry could offer. Are you working on any exciting new projects now? How do you think that will help people?

Yes, as a staff UX and UI designer at Fortinet, I’m currently immersed in an exciting project that holds significant promise in the realm of digital product design. This project is named FortiToken Cloud and focused on enhancing the user experience and interface design of a critical cybersecurity product.

The cybersecurity landscape is dynamic and ever-evolving, and our mission is to ensure that our users have not only robust security but also a seamless and intuitive experience. We are redesigning the interface to be more user-centric, ensuring that users, whether experts or novices, can navigate the product with ease.

The impact of this project is two-fold. First, it directly contributes to the usability and effectiveness of our cybersecurity product, helping organizations and individuals protect their digital assets with confidence. Second, it serves as a testament to Fortinet’s commitment to user-centric design, creating solutions that are not only secure but also user-friendly.

In my role as a staff UX and UI designer owning the whole design, I believe that user-centric design is a critical component of cybersecurity. By improving the user experience, we empower users to make informed decisions and effectively respond to security threats. This project aligns with Fortinet’s mission to make the digital world safer and more user-friendly, ensuring that technology is an enabler, not a barrier, in our daily lives.

Ok super. Thank you for all that. Let’s now shift to the main focus of our interview. Are you currently satisfied with the status quo regarding women in STEM? What specific changes do you think are needed to change the status quo?

This is really a good question. Achieving true gender equality in STEM is an ongoing journey, and while we’ve made significant progress, there are specific changes needed to further change the status quo. First and foremost, we must focus on promoting diverse representation, particularly at the leadership level. More women in high-ranking STEM positions can serve as powerful role models, inspiring and paving the way for future generations.

Mentorship and role models are crucial aspects of this transformation. Encouraging mentorship programs and highlighting successful women in STEM can provide invaluable support to those navigating these industries, helping them overcome unique challenges.

Early education is another key factor. We should actively promote STEM subjects as exciting, accessible, and essential for solving real-world problems from an early age, ensuring that young girls see themselves as future scientists, engineers, and tech leaders.

Lastly, continual advocacy is vital. We must challenge stereotypes and biases in both society and the workplace. By doing so, we can create a cultural shift that normalizes women’s contributions to STEM and encourages equitable treatment and opportunities.

The path to true gender equity in STEM requires collective effort. It’s about changing societal perceptions, workplace dynamics, and educational practices. As a woman in STEM, I’m dedicated to contributing to this transformation by actively mentoring and advocating for change. The more we challenge the status quo, the closer we come to a future where women in STEM are the norm, not the exception.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges faced by women in STEM or Tech that aren’t typically faced by their male counterparts? What would you suggest to address this?

Absolutely, Women in STEM often have the unique challenges that their male counterparts may not encounter to the same degree. Some of the key challenges include:

Gender Bias: Gender bias can manifest in various forms, from stereotypes about women’s abilities in STEM to microaggressions in the workplace. Overcoming these biases requires ongoing education and awareness programs to promote a more inclusive culture.

Underrepresentation: Women are underrepresented in STEM fields, which can lead to feelings of isolation and limited access to networks. Encouraging more girls and women to pursue STEM education and careers is essential to address this gap.

Work-Life Balance: Balancing demanding STEM careers with family and personal life can be particularly challenging for women. Flexible work arrangements and support for childcare can help address this issue.

Lack of Role Models: Limited visibility of successful women in STEM can make it difficult for younger generations to envision themselves in these roles. Highlighting female role models and their achievements can inspire the next generation.

Networking Opportunities: Building professional networks is crucial for career advancement. Women may have limited access to the same networks as their male counterparts. Encouraging mentorship programs and creating inclusive networking events can help address this challenge.

To address these challenges, we should work on creating inclusive environments in STEM. This involves implementing policies that support diversity and inclusion, providing mentorship opportunities, and advocating for equal pay and advancement. We also need to focus on education, encouraging young girls to explore STEM fields from an early age and breaking any gender-related stereotypes. By addressing these challenges together, we can create a more equitable and diverse STEM community.

What are the “myths” that you would like to dispel about being a woman in STEM or Tech. Can you explain what you mean?

Sure, I feel the same way about this question! There are a few myths about women in STEM that I’d love to debunk. One common one is the idea that women are somehow less capable in technical fields than men. That’s simply not true. Women have made remarkable contributions to STEM throughout history, and they’re just as capable as their male counterparts.

Another misconception is that STEM is a solitary and anti-social career path. In reality, STEM professionals often work in collaborative teams, solving complex problems together. It’s a field that values teamwork and innovation.

Some think that STEM is rigid and lacks creativity, but that’s far from accurate. STEM is incredibly dynamic and always evolving. It offers ample room for creativity, innovation, and adaptability.

And let’s not forget the notion that women in STEM must sacrifice family life. Many women in STEM successfully balance their careers with family responsibilities, and organizations are increasingly providing flexible work arrangements to support this.

These myths can discourage women from considering STEM careers, which is a missed opportunity for everyone involved. We should challenge and debunk these myths to inspire more women to explore the diverse and exciting opportunities in STEM. Women thrive in STEM, bringing valuable perspectives and contributions to the table.

What are your “5 Leadership Lessons I Learned From My Experience as a Woman in STEM or Tech” and why. (Please share a story or example for each.)

For my past decades years of working experience in STEM, the lessons I learned definitely not only five, but I’d love to summarize five main leadership lessons I’ve learned as a woman in STEM:

Embrace Diversity and Inclusion: One key lesson is that diversity fuels innovation. When I was a design manager at Mastercard, I led a diverse team on a project with different cultural backgrounds and experiences. It was through this mix of perspectives that we came up with groundbreaking solutions that catered to a global audience. This experience taught me the power of diversity in driving creativity and success.

Lead by Example: Leading by example is essential in STEM. In one instance, I encountered a challenging problem that seemed unsolvable. Instead of just directing my team, I rolled up my sleeves and worked alongside them. My commitment to hands-on problem-solving inspired the team’s determination, and together, we found a solution. This taught me that as a leader, my actions can set the tone for the entire team.

Continuous Learning and Adaptability: The tech industry evolves rapidly, so staying up-to-date is crucial. I’ve learned that being open to learning and adapting is paramount. I recall a project where we had to pivot our entire approach due to a shift in market trends. The ability to quickly adapt, learn new technologies, and lead my team through this transition was invaluable.

Mentorship and Collaboration: Mentorship is a powerful tool in nurturing talent. I’ve had the privilege of mentoring younger professionals in STEM. One of my mentees faced a complex challenge and felt overwhelmed. Through our collaboration and guidance, she not only overcame the challenge but also grew as a confident problem-solver. This reinforced the importance of mentorship and the impact it can have on others’ careers.

Resilience and Perseverance: STEM can present tough challenges, and setbacks are part of the journey. I once led a project that faced numerous obstacles, from technical glitches to budget constraints. It seemed like the odds were against us, but we persevered. This experience taught me that resilience and determination are vital in achieving our goals in the face of adversity.

These lessons have shaped my leadership style and my approach to navigating the ever-evolving landscape of STEM. They underline the importance of embracing diversity, leading by example, continuous learning, mentorship, and unwavering resilience.

What advice would you give to other women leaders to help their team to thrive?

Certainly! In fostering a thriving team, here’s some advice I’d offer to fellow women leaders:

First and foremost, embrace diversity within your team. Encouraging various voices and backgrounds ignites creativity and innovation. Everyone should feel valued and heard, contributing to a richer work environment.

Lead by example — your actions set the tone. Demonstrate dedication, commitment, and a strong work ethic. When your team witnesses your readiness to tackle challenges, they’re inspired to do the same.

Mentorship can be a game-changer, particularly for those early in their careers. Offering your knowledge and experiences can greatly impact their professional journey.

Cultivate a culture of continuous learning and growth. In an environment where mistakes are seen as opportunities for improvement, and new skills are celebrated, everyone benefits.

Prioritize work-life balance. Acknowledge the importance of personal time for your team’s well-being and productivity.

Don’t forget to celebrate the achievements! Recognition and rewards boost morale and motivation.

Advocate for career advancement within your organization. Ensure your team members have access to opportunities for growth and development.

Open and transparent communication is key. Ensure your team understands the goals and vision, and offer regular feedback and guidance.

Maintain resilience in the face of challenges. Show your team that with determination and adaptability, obstacles can be overcome.

Inspire confidence in your team. Encourage them to take calculated risks, knowing they have your unwavering support.

I believe that by embracing these principles, women leaders can create an empowering environment where their teams thrive and reach their full potential.

What advice would you give to other women leaders about the best way to manage a large team?

Sure, managing a large team can be both rewarding and challenging. It’s crucial to establish clear communication channels, delegate tasks based on team members’ strengths, set explicit goals and expectations, and foster a collaborative culture. Effective leadership, regular feedback, and conflict-resolution strategies are essential for maintaining a positive work environment. Supporting professional development, time management, adaptability, and finding the right balance between empowerment and oversight are key aspects of effective team management. Leveraging technology and tools can help streamline processes. Ultimately, the role of a leader is to guide and support the team in achieving their goals, and following these guidelines can help women leaders effectively manage large teams and drive success.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

Sure thing, I’m grateful to many individuals who have played a pivotal role in my journey. One person I’m particularly thankful for is my former boss at AEssenseGrowth. They recognized my potential and provided me with opportunities to take on challenging projects, even when I was relatively early in my career.

One instance that stands out is when I was entrusted with leading a high-stakes project. It was a considerable leap of faith on their part, and I felt both excited and daunted by the responsibility. Throughout the project, my manager offered guidance and support, allowing me to navigate complex challenges and make critical decisions.

What made this experience truly transformative was the unwavering trust and encouragement I received. Their mentorship wasn’t just about giving instructions but about empowering me to develop my problem-solving skills and grow as a leader. Their belief in my abilities gave me the confidence to overcome obstacles and achieve success.

This experience taught me the immense impact that mentorship and support from senior leaders can have on one’s career. It underscored the importance of paying it forward and offering guidance to emerging talents in the field. I’m forever grateful for the mentorship I received, and it continues to inspire me to mentor others and contribute to the growth of future leaders in STEM and tech.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

Certainly, I’ve always believed that success is most meaningful when it’s used to make a positive impact. In my career, this has translated into mentorship for emerging talents in STEM and tech, active engagement in design communities and associations, and advocating for diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. Additionally, I’ve been a vocal supporter of sustainability initiatives and have actively promoted eco-friendly practices within my teams. Sharing knowledge through books and papers is my way of contributing to the field and inspiring the next generation. My goal is to use my success as a platform for positive change, both within the tech world and in addressing broader societal and environmental issues.

You are a person of enormous influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-)

Really love this question! If I could inspire a movement, it would center around fostering STEM and tech education and opportunities for underprivileged communities around the world. The movement would aim to bridge the digital divide and provide access to quality education, resources, and mentorship for individuals who may not have had the same privileges or opportunities.

STEM and tech fields offer the potential for innovation, economic growth, and improved quality of life. However, many communities, especially in less economically developed regions, face barriers to access and participation in these fields. My movement would seek to break down those barriers and empower individuals to pursue careers in STEM and tech.

The impact of this movement would extend beyond individual success. It could lead to the development of local tech ecosystems, job creation, and solutions to community challenges. By empowering underprivileged communities with the tools and knowledge to thrive in STEM and tech, we can create a more equitable and innovative future for all.

It’s a movement that, once ignited, has the potential to transform lives and societies on a global scale.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

Definitely. One of my favorite life lesson quotes is, “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.” This quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt has been incredibly relevant in my life, particularly in my journey in STEM and tech.

Throughout my career, I’ve encountered various challenges and uncertainties. There were times when I questioned whether I could take on new roles, lead complex projects, or adapt to rapidly evolving technologies. However, this quote reminds me that doubts and limitations are often self-imposed. It encourages me to confront those doubts, embrace change, and strive for continuous growth.

By pushing past my doubts and embracing opportunities, I’ve been able to realize what I once considered unattainable. It’s a reminder that our potential is vast, and our journey in STEM and tech is limited only by the doubts we impose on ourselves. This quote has been a source of motivation to continuously push boundaries, learn, and evolve in my career, ultimately leading to new achievements and contributions to the field.

Although he is no longer with us, his legacy continues to inspire and shape the way we approach product design and technology.

A conversation with Steve Jobs would have been an incredible opportunity to learn from his insights into design, innovation, and the intersection of technology and the humanities. His ability to envision and create products that not only meet user needs but also delight them is a source of ongoing inspiration for designers in the field.

While this meeting unfortunately can’t happen, his impact on my work and the tech industry as a whole remains profound, and I continue to draw inspiration from his legacy.
