Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we dive in, our readers would love to get to know you a bit better. Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
My journey into the energy sector began in the late 1990s during my time at McKinsey in Russia. This experience exposed me to the energy industry and revealed numerous opportunities for improvement through new ventures, both technology-based and otherwise. When I left the firm to become an entrepreneur, various aspects of energy efficiency naturally became the focus of my interests.
In 2006, my partners and I launched a company aimed at eliminating the flaring of associated petroleum gas. While this venture was ahead of its time and ultimately didn’t succeed, it laid the foundation for our next project, which we successfully sold to a strategic buyer in 2013.
Building on this momentum, we founded another venture centered on a novel energy technology: producing high-octane gasoline from low-value inputs. More recently, in 2022, we pivoted to focus on the production of sustainable aviation fuel from renewable feedstocks.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?
Many stories come to mind, but here’s one I particularly like. I grew up in the Soviet Union, in a city with a concentrated military industry. In the early 1990s, as the communist state disintegrated, companies that once produced tanks and rockets were forced to adapt to the market and seek new products.
At the time, I worked at a local blood bank. One day, our boss showed up with an engineer in tow. One of these ex-military plants wanted to manufacture equipment for the blood bank. The engineer interviewed us about our work, the equipment we used, and the devices we might need. After our explanation, his first question caught us off guard: “So, what is the target fall height?” Seeing our confusion, he clarified, “From what height should the device remain operational after falling?”
We didn’t know exactly what kind of military equipment his company had been producing, but it was clear that in his previous line of work, things fell hard and often. Knowing the survivable fall height was crucial. For us in the blood bank, the devices we used simply sat on lab benches. We cared about many aspects of the equipment, but “target fall height” had never crossed our minds. For him, everything was bound to fall and should work afterward; this was apparently the key feature of everything he designed.
The engineer never returned, but that conversation continually reminds me how people’s backgrounds influence their perspectives. Since then, whenever I speak with someone from a different background, I recall this story and try to identify the differences that may shape their perception.
Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?
As an entrepreneur, I had some pretty spectacular early success, which made me overconfident for a while, and that led to mistakes that now make me shake my head and smile. This particular story takes place in Russia during the mid-2000s when a tsunami of car imports was overwhelming the country’s small car service industry.
I analyzed the market in proper McKinsey fashion and decided to build a network of car services. We bought a couple of properties, hired a team and launched the business. Very quickly, the revenue grew, but somehow, the profits lagged, no matter how much better we were compared to the competition — who made tons of money.
Upon closer inspection, it turned out that we were literally the only company in the industry that paid taxes! Over time, we made it all work by becoming even more efficient and building up scale, but that moment was when I realized that not everyone paid taxes was priceless.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
There have been too many individuals to name them all, but I’d like to highlight one person who had a significant impact on a number of people, including me. Helen Henderson led the expansion of INSEAD, an international business school in France, into Russia. Her success made it possible for dozens of others, including myself, to succeed. She braved the unknown language and unfamiliar culture, brought alum interviewers to the country, strong-armed large banks into offering us student loans, and helped us get scholarships.
Thanks to her dedication, many aspiring businesspeople, myself included, were able to reach our potential. Without her efforts, many of us wouldn’t have had the opportunity to pursue our careers. Her work at INSEAD opened doors that might have otherwise remained closed, and I am incredibly grateful for the trust and opportunities she provided to me and others.
You are a successful business leader. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?
First and foremost is the ability to build and maintain relationships. Many smarter people wrote on the subject, and I am surprised that this ability does not receive enough airtime in today’s startup world. Strong relationships are the foundation of any successful venture, whether it’s securing partners, clients, or investors.
The second trait is resilience. Whether you’re building a company, a product, or even a family, there will inevitably be times when things go decidedly sideways. The ability to pick yourself up and keep moving forward is essential.
The third is analytical honesty. This ties into resilience because, often, the hardships we face are of our own making. As the saying goes, “We have met the enemy, and it is us.” Being able to take an honest, objective look at the situation, identify where things went wrong, and tackle the root cause is a key part of overcoming obstacles and moving forward.
Thank you for that. Let’s jump to the core of our discussion. Can you share with our readers a bit about the innovations that you are bringing to the Aviation and Air Travel industries?
Certainly, Universal Fuel Technologies is focused on reducing the carbon footprint of the aviation and air travel industries with innovation in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. Aviation accounts for about 2.5% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and it is a growing industry. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has an ambitious net-zero carbon by 2050 goal, and airlines are making their own decarbonization pledges. To get to net-zero, we need carbon-reducing technologies, namely sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs).
At Universal Fuel Technologies, we have developed a unique chemical process that enables cost-effective SAF production from a wide variety of renewable raw materials. This is important because SAF is the most viable solution for decarbonizing aviation, and the increasing demand is putting a strain on available feedstocks. Our Flexiforming technology can help fill a gap in the market because of its compatibility with various raw materials and because it converts low-value byproducts from other processing methods to SAF. By incorporating Flexiforming into existing production setups, we’re giving SAF producers more flexibility with feedstock choices, helping them cut carbon emissions by up to 75% and potentially halving costs compared to alternative methods.
Which “pain point” are you trying to address by introducing these innovations?
We’re addressing a few pain points with Flexiforming, but the most significant is cost. We must lower the costs of SAF to achieve widespread adoption. SAF processing isn’t cheap to deploy, but we can enhance energy efficiency and reduce hydrogen requirements to reduce costs. One of the most promising pathways to SAF is converting ethanol to jet fuel. Notably, our technology is approximately half the cost of current ethanol-to-jet processes. Additionally, Flexiforming is compatible with the most widely used existing SAF processing technologies, which have a 20% output of low-value byproducts. Flexiforming can actually upgrade these byproducts to high-value SAF, increasing monetization opportunities for the producer.
We’re also mitigating risks associated with feedstock availability and pricing because Flexiforming works with various renewable feedstocks and production methods, providing SAF producers with the flexibility to adapt to market changes. As the demand for SAF increases and the industry shifts towards greener options, versatility is vital. We’re not just making SAF production cheaper; our technology is also scalable and easy to integrate into existing setups. Additionally, as the industry moves towards using higher SAF blends and eventually 100% SAF, our technology is positioned to meet current and anticipated future regulatory standards.
How do you envision that this might disrupt the status quo?
The sustainable aviation industry is multifaceted, with various alternative technologies, such as electric and hydrogen propulsion systems, looking to replace fossil fuels. While these alternatives are notable, their applicability for widespread adoption, particularly in long-haul flights (which account for 85–90% of the demand), is limited due to higher energy requirements, necessary infrastructure development, and cost. Sustainable aviation fuel is the most viable solution for positively impacting the aviation industry’s emissions in the near term without waiting for infrastructure to be built or technology to advance. Our Flexiforming technology provides a practical and efficient pathway for drop-in-ready SAF production that complements existing SAF production processes while reducing costs and carbon emissions. The value Flexiforming can add could be the difference maker in achieving economically viable SAF.
