As a part of this series, I had the pleasure of interviewing Nisha Sarveswaran.

With a background in Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering, Nisha is an experienced entrepreneur who has been featured at the CIX Summit, CityAge’s Food’s Future series, and Ontario Bioscience Innovation Organization’s TWiST speaker series. Through Kraken Sense, she is revolutionizing pathogen detection by leveraging real-time technology, autonomous water sampling, and cloud-based encryption. The technology can be applied in agriculture by seamlessly integrating into irrigation systems to monitor contaminants before watering crops.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we dig in, our readers would like to get to know you. Can you tell us a bit about how you grew up?

I grew up in Canada, surrounded by a diverse and multicultural community that fostered a love for learning and exploration. From a young age, I was fascinated by the wonders of science and technology.

My journey began in aerospace engineering, where I had the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects and contribute to advancements in aviation. However, my curiosity led me to explore new frontiers, and I transitioned into the field of nuclear engineering. This allowed me to delve into the complexities of energy systems and contribute to sustainable solutions.

In 2019, I embarked on a new adventure by venturing into the world of biotech. I founded Kraken Sense, a company focused on developing innovative devices for various industries, including agriculture. This transition allowed me to combine my passion for technology with my deep-rooted interest in promoting sustainable practices in agriculture.

Throughout my career path, I’ve been fortunate to work on diverse projects and collaborate with brilliant minds. These experiences have shaped my perspective and fueled my determination to make a positive impact on the world through technological innovation.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you began your career?

One of the most interesting stories revolves around a transformative trip to India. During this journey, I witnessed firsthand the significant challenges and concerns surrounding food safety in the region. It was a profound experience that left a lasting impression on me. Coincidentally, around the same time, I came across sensors capable of detecting pathogens quickly and accurately. It was time that the idea for Kraken Sense took root.

Inspired by the pressing need for safe food and drinking water, my co-founder, Jamal Zeinalov, and I saw an opportunity to leverage our technical expertise to address this critical issue. We recognized the potential to turn the pathogen sensing concept into a reality and make a positive impact on food safety. From there, the idea began to take shape, and in 2019, Kraken Sense was established. Our vision was to provide innovative solutions that would enable rapid and reliable detection of pathogens in various industries, including agriculture. This journey has been both challenging and rewarding, as we strive to make a meaningful difference in ensuring safe and secure food production.

The trip to India served as a catalyst for our mission, igniting a passion within us to create a company dedicated to enhancing food safety practices. It exemplifies the power of firsthand experiences and the potential to transform ideas into tangible solutions that can have a real-world impact.

You are a successful leader. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?

Bringing an idea to fruition can be a challenging journey filled with obstacles and setbacks. As an entrepreneur, resilience is crucial, especially when introducing new and disruptive technology to the market. Being resilient allows you to stay focused on your goals, adapt to changing circumstances, and maintain a long-term vision despite obstacles. Throughout our journey with Kraken Sense, we encountered numerous hurdles that required us to pivot and view them as new opportunities. Often, in science and engineering, we may have a solution in mind that works theoretically, but through experimentation, we discover that another approach works better. Being flexible and embracing these curveballs is essential for growth and success.

Creativity is another essential trait for an entrepreneur. When faced with obstacles, a leader must challenge existing norms and come up with innovative solutions to complex problems. Creativity enables you to envision possibilities that others might overlook, identify market gaps, and design unique and impactful products or services. This is exactly how Kraken Sense started. Recognizing the need for rapid pathogen detection, we embarked on developing a compact, field-deployable device without compromising accuracy and reliability. Through collaborative brainstorming and relentless creativity, we devised a novel solution that combined cutting-edge microfluidics and genome processing. This creative approach not only solved our design challenge but also positioned us as pioneers in the field of rapid pathogen detection.

Lastly, understanding each member of your team and the dynamics of the team as a whole is crucial for guiding the growth and success of a company. As a leader, I strive to inspire and motivate my team, provide clear direction, and effectively communicate the vision and mission of Kraken Sense. I make an effort to get to know each team member individually, understanding their strengths, motivators, and preferred methods of encouragement. Each employee is unique and values different methods of encouragement so I ensure I lead each individual accordingly. By creating an environment that nurtures innovation and values the contributions of each team member, we foster a collaborative culture that drives our success.

These traits have enabled us to overcome obstacles, develop innovative solutions, and inspire our team to achieve remarkable results. As we continue to grow and make a positive impact, these traits will remain essential in navigating future challenges and driving the success of Kraken Sense.

Are you working on any exciting new projects now? How do you think that will help people?

Yes, we are currently working on some exciting new projects at Kraken Sense. One of our key focuses is expanding the implementation of our proprietary technology by partnering with agricultural experts. This technology holds great potential to benefit people, particularly in the field of agriculture. By seamlessly integrating our autonomous pathogen detection system into irrigation systems, we can effectively monitor contaminants, such as E. coli, Listeria, Legionella, and others. Through this, we aim to enhance food safety, protect public health, and provide farmers with a reliable and efficient tool to monitor contaminants before watering their crops.

By detecting and addressing potential pathogen contamination at an early stage, we can prevent the spread of harmful bacteria and ensure the production of safe and high-quality crops. This not only safeguards consumers from foodborne illnesses but also helps farmers maintain the integrity of their harvests and comply with stringent quality standards.

Moreover, our technology brings convenience and efficiency to the monitoring process. The autonomous nature of our system eliminates the need for manual sampling and testing, saving valuable time and resources for farmers. By streamlining the pathogen detection process, we enable farmers to make informed decisions promptly, take appropriate actions, and ensure the safety of their crops.

Ok super. Thank you for all that. Let’s now shift to the main focus of our interview. How did you become involved in AgTech, and why does it matter to you?

I became involved in AgTech with the goal of automating a lengthy laboratory process. Traditional methods of identifying pathogens in a water source can take days, or even weeks. Typically, collecting a sample and shipping it off to a lab for testing is required, resulting in a long waiting period for results. However, with our device, real-time testing can be conducted multiple times a day, and immediate warnings are provided when a contaminant is detected. At Kraken Sense, we specialize in developing customized devices for various industries, including agriculture. Recognizing the vital role of agriculture in ensuring food quality, we believe that our technology can bring significant benefits to everyone involved.

What are the most transformative technologies currently in use in AgTech, and how are they revolutionizing the industry?

I have always been fascinated by technologies that enhance efficiency, reduce resource wastage, boost crop yields, and promote sustainable farming practices. At Kraken Sense, we have integrated some of these transformative technologies into our devices, revolutionizing the AgTech industry in multiple ways.

One of these game-changing technologies is Precision Agriculture. By leveraging real-time data, farmers gain valuable insights that empower them to make informed decisions. This includes optimizing resource allocation, reducing input waste, and ultimately increasing overall crop yields. Precision Agriculture revolutionizes cultivation practices by enabling data-driven precision and efficiency.

Another exciting development in AgTech is Robotics and Automation. By reducing the reliance on manual labor for labor-intensive and repetitive tasks, farmers can redirect their time and effort toward more critical activities. Automation minimizes human error and increases efficiency and accuracy, making a significant impact on farm operations.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is also a compelling technology that I find highly intriguing. Through interconnected devices, farmers can remotely monitor and control crucial aspects such as irrigation systems, weather conditions, and crop health. This real-time monitoring and control enable timely interventions, efficient resource management, and proactive problem-solving for optimal farming outcomes.

How do these technologies contribute to sustainable agriculture practices and the fight against climate change?

The transformative technologies in AgTech, such as precision agriculture, automation, and IoT, are playing a pivotal role in promoting sustainable agriculture practices and combating climate change. These innovations offer significant benefits in terms of resource efficiency, environmental impact reduction, and the overall resilience of the agricultural industry.

Precision Agriculture stands out as a powerful tool for optimizing resource allocation, minimizing waste, and maximizing crop yields. By precisely delivering water, fertilizers, and pesticides where and when they are most needed, farmers can minimize the environmental footprint while ensuring efficient resource utilization. This approach minimizes water consumption, chemical runoff, and greenhouse gas emissions, fostering sustainable farming practices.

Automation is another key driver of sustainability in agriculture. By automating labor-intensive tasks like planting and harvesting, the industry can reduce reliance on manual labor, leading to more efficient operations. Integrating transformative technologies with existing farming practices can definitely present certain challenges. However, at Kraken Sense, we have designed our devices to seamlessly integrate into any system, making the transition smoother.

One challenge typically faced to implement such technology is the need for adequate training and technical knowledge. Farmers and agricultural workers need to be trained on how to use and maintain these technologies effectively. It can be a learning curve for those who are not familiar with advanced digital tools and data analytics. That’s why it was critical for our devices to be fully autonomous to eliminate the need for training or expertise.

Furthermore, there may be resistance or hesitation from farmers to adopt new practices or change their traditional methods. Overcoming this resistance and building trust in the effectiveness and reliability of these technologies requires awareness, education, and demonstrating tangible benefits.

By addressing these challenges and providing user-friendly, adaptable, and cost-effective solutions, Kraken Sense aims to facilitate the integration of transformative technologies into existing farming practices. We believe that our autonomous and easily deployable devices can help farmers seamlessly incorporate our pathogen detection systems into their operations, ultimately enhancing productivity, sustainability, and food safety.

What emerging technologies do you see as having the potential to disrupt the AgTech industry in the next 5–10 years?

I believe AI will continue to transform AgTech by providing predictive insights to optimize farming. We are seeing smart technology being implemented in almost every industry and Agriculture is no exception.

When it comes to the future, advanced robotics will likely play a pivotal role in automating those labor-intensive tasks that farmers face daily — think planting, harvesting, and pruning. By integrating AI capabilities, robotic systems can make autonomous decisions based on real-time data, leading to improved operational efficiency and enhanced productivity.

Moreover, gene editing technologies like CRISPR-Cas9 hold tremendous potential for revolutionizing crop improvement. They have the power to enhance desirable traits in crops and increase their resistance to diseases and environmental stresses. On top of that, synthetic biology could lend a helping hand in developing bio-based fertilizers, better crop protection methods, and enhanced plant-microbe interactions.

These emerging technologies truly open up a world of exciting possibilities for agriculture. They have the potential to boost efficiency, increase productivity, and promote sustainability in the industry. With their help, farmers will be able to meet the ever-growing demands for food while minimizing resource consumption and reducing their environmental impact. It’s an incredibly promising future for AgTech!

What kind of policy changes would be beneficial for the growth of the AgTech industry?

To support AgTech’s growth, policy changes can foster innovation and widespread adoption. Governments can incentivize research and development in AgTech through grants, tax credits, and funding. Streamlining regulations and creating clear guidelines tailored to AgTech is crucial. Collaboration between government agencies, research institutions, and private enterprises fosters knowledge-sharing. Supporting initiatives that enhance digital infrastructure, like expanding broadband access in rural areas, facilitates advanced technology adoption. These changes create an enabling environment for AgTech to thrive, driving sustainable agriculture, improving productivity, and addressing global food security.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in AgTech?

My advice for someone looking to start a career in AgTech would be to embrace curiosity and continuous learning. Stay informed about emerging technologies, industry trends, and agricultural practices. Seek out opportunities to gain hands-on experience and collaborate with experts in the field. Network with professionals and organizations in AgTech to expand your knowledge and stay connected to industry advancements. Be open to innovation, think creatively, and be adaptable to the evolving needs of the agricultural sector. If I could inspire a movement that brings the most good to the most people, it would be about sustainability and environmental stewardship. The movement aims to build a sustainable future for our planet. It starts with widespread environmental education, raising awareness about the impact of human actions on the health of our planet and the importance of sustainable practices. We advocate for a rapid transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, to combat climate change and create a healthier environment. The movement also promotes responsible consumption, encouraging individuals and businesses to choose sustainable products and reduce waste. Conservation and restoration of ecosystems and biodiversity are vital, focusing on initiatives like reforestation and habitat preservation. Lastly, we foster global collaboration and cooperation to address environmental challenges collectively.
