… I appreciate hearing comedians who are like, “Oh yeah, I cringe a little at some of the stuff that I used to do because it was punching down. It was hurting people.”
So that’s the fun challenge of the job, to keep the comedy universal or to specifically punch up — there are a lot of people in power that deserve to have satire aimed at them. Punching laterally, I think, is okay. And inwardly.
You just have to be careful not to punch your self-esteem too hard.
